Virnig Salt Spreader – Snow Removal
The Virnig Salt Spreader is a high-capacity, front-mounted spreading system designed to help snow removal contractors and property managers preload, store, and apply deicing materials faster and more efficiently. Its modular, scalable design adapts to sites of any size, reducing liability through quicker application and eliminating the need for salt trucks during active snowstorms.
Featuring dual spinners, the Virnig Salt Spreader delivers a uniform, consistent spread pattern to both sides, minimizing material waste and reducing the number of passes required. The front-mounted design provides superior operator visibility, improving accuracy, control, and safety in tight or high-traffic areas.
Built for durability in harsh winter conditions, the spreader includes a corrosion-resistant motor with a seal protector and nickel-plated shaft to prevent premature failure. Dual augers with chains keep salt, sand, and mixed materials flowing smoothly by breaking up clumps for consistent application. Stackable, lockable poly totes (sold separately) keep up to ¾ cubic yard of material clean, dry, and fully contained, making them easier to transport and fill compared to traditional scoop spreaders.

*Estimated rates based on factory flow control setting and free-flowing material. Actual rates may vary. When using sand instead of salt, multiply application rates by 1.25 to account for higher density and weight.
The SaltSaver auger is for lighter application rates. It’s ideal if you’re focused on pretreating or want to use less salt overall. The MaxCover auger applies more material per acre, making it a better fit for deicing, higher travel speeds or when heavier coverage is needed.
Here’s a quick example when traveling at 5 mph:
If you’re doing both pretreating and deicing on the same job, some users recommend going with the SaltSaver. It’s more flexible, and you can always slow down ground speed slightly to increase the amount applied when needed, without changing augers.
Also, if you’re using sand instead of salt, multiply the rates by 1.25 to account for the heavier material.
HOW WELL DOES THE SPREADER APPLY SAND OR SALT/SAND MIXES?The system delivers a nice, consistent spread pattern, even with heavier materials like sand or salt/sand blends. The augers with chains help keep material flowing consistently.
CAN I CONTROL THE SPREAD RATE OR SPREAD WIDTH?Yes, you have control over both. Most modern loaders allow you to adjust hydraulic flow directly from the joystick, which lets you fine-tune the spread rate and width on the fly.
From the factory, the spreader is set to throw about 15 feet to each side. Operators have reported dialing that down to as little as 4 feet using the loader’s joystick flow control, which is great for tighter spaces or when you want to reduce salt usage.
Also, you can manually adjust the flow control valve on the spreader’s hydraulic manifold. This does require tools, and it allows you to set a new baseline for both spread width and rate. Keep in mind the application rate and width adjust together. More hydraulic flow going to the motors means more material and a wider throw; less flow means less material and a narrower path.
SHOULD I PRE-TREAT THE SALT BEFORE LOADING IT INTO TOTES?It’s recommended to pre-treat salt with a magnesium chloride based liquid to prevent clumping and keeps salt from freezing in the totes.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING DUAL SPINNERS INSTEAD OF SINGLE?Dual spinners let you cover more ground in fewer passes and apply more material per pass. That means faster coverage and better results in less time.
With a single spinner, especially on truck salters, you often get an uneven pattern. One side might throw 15 feet, the other barely 5. This forces extra passes and overlapping to avoid missing spots.
Dual spinners throw evenly across the full width and apply twice as much salt as a single spinner. With dual spinners, you’re not guessing or doubling back, you’re done in one clean shot. More coverage. More material. Less time.
HOW DOES THE SALT SPREADER COMPARE TO A SCOOP-AND-SPREAD SALTER?Scoop-and-spread salters can be harder to fill and use. They typically only have only one spinner and limited visibility while loading because you have to tip the bucket forward, making it tough to see how much salt you’re getting. It’s also harder to fill them completely. With totes, the wide-open top lets you see exactly how much salt is inside, so you can fill it 100% every time. Plus, our system uses dual spinners for better, wider spreading. Overall, it’s faster, easier, and more operator-friendly.
